In the Usa, a current or previous employer is prohibited from disclosing an employee's compensation as it is considered protected, confidential information.

Tin can an employer inquire for pay stubs?  Past and large yes though laws are changing in this regard so bank check local and state laws.  Are you lot legally required to supply it prior to employment? No.  Tin can a prospective employer rescind a job offer if you decline to provide information technology?  Sure.  If there is a clause asking for pay stubs in an offer letter, call the hiring director (not HR) and ask that clause be removed before yous volition accept.  Inquire yourself: Is this really a company you would want to work for?  There really is NO legitimate reason to ask for this data as your bounty in the new company should be based on your potential position, the electric current salary range at the company for this and similar positions and your negotiations with them - PERIOD.

If you practice decide to share your pay stubs or W2s,don't forge or alter them.

An interesting article on the field of study in not-legalese:

Legal Power of a Potential Employer to Verify Bacon History

@ndr3a

I take never been asked to provide a current pay stub. The only question related to pay that I have been asked on a interview is: What are you bacon expectations?

Jonathan170

Not a pay stub merely asked if they could check my salary with the previous employer.

It is wrong, but becoming standard in the United states for prospective employers to ask hopefuls for their electric current salary or pay structure.  It is an easy way for non-technicals (like standard corporation HR peeps) to "manage" their pre interview resume listing.  For the hopeful it means fifty-fifty though yous may take the skills and the experience working a sure position, the new employer may experience comfy paying y'all less if your electric current employer was also paying you less than y'all deserve.  It makes it much harder to merchandise up.  If I was asked for a pay stub i'd striking the bricks laughing all the manner.

I accept never been asked and would remember its kind of weird

[someone please sanity check me but] I call back it's illegal for your previous employer to disclose your pay to anyone without your written consent. There's very little a former US employer is allowed to divulge. Dates of employment and title are about the extent of it from what I've been told by my HR folks.

I have never been asked for verification, but I accept been asked nearly previous pay. I would 100% deny them whatever access to my financial history. Any potential employer that insisted, I wouldn't desire to piece of work for. The just exception to this rule as when I was in sales, asking for a W2 was fairly common to prove your commissions and that you were a top earner.

Applications still insist for previous pay and salary requirements, even there I tend to either put negotiable or somewhere within the bounds of the position I'chiliad applying to, based on the electric current market place ranges. In person during interviews, I've learned never to give a solid number and instead a range based upon research. Y'all never want to testify your hand in the negotiation.

I was asked by a previous employer while negotiating salary to see my electric current pay stub.  I flat out refused. I also refused to disclose my current and past pay even though they asked multiple times. I told them my target bacon range and if it didn't line up with their expectations we could part ways. I got an offer and accepted it, merely in hindsight they had a lot of practices I didn't hold with.

I had been asked by a recruiter to provide current salary information and when I refused they said we couldn't continue discussions, so I said that's fine and we stopped talking. I'k fine with stating what I'chiliad looking for or asking what their range is, merely they have no right to my personal financial data.  I know in a few cases I've excluded myself considering I asked for too much, but I'thou okay with that also.

Yep- I too flat out refused on the 1st (evar! request) and subsequent efforts... 1st time in 30+ years that I've been asked to produce one.

There is quite a lot of info on those things and I would never hand 1 over in a 1000000 years.

Careful with the Photoshop arroyoDamonC:

At my last gig, a very competent person was summarily dismissed ~7 months subsequently hire for doctoring her submitted pay stub at the time of rent (jealous fellow evidently ratted her out by sending e-mail to a number of higher-ups merely not meee LOL).

That organization did non start asking for pay stubs until after the (2nd and quite boorish) VP of HR completed her MBA "connect the dots" program...

Very interesting they're asking for a paystub... have yous asked them directly why they needed it?

Yashnahain

Pretty certain this was a thing when I was joining a mega corp at the beginning of my career. Sort of a 'whatever, I demand income' deal.

At present days I would probably odor the hierarchy as I entered the door, walk out, call and apologize that I can't make the interview. Thank them for the opportunity then not reply to any follow ups. I'm not some well known superstar, but you don't demand to exist to exist picky. Only v years or so exp. This sort of intrusion in to personal info is well beyond a deal billow for me.

I've heard Nutanix has pulled this recently. Not sure if true or non but a potential former New hire of theirs stated this....

Never accept been asked to give that data on an interview.

In South Africa this is a common practice, recruitment companies and the companies themselves enquire for them. I'm certain it is to give y'all the blank minimum increment. In the past four years I have moved twice and both times I was asked and both times I was offered a measly R1000 p/m increment ($100).
I can't stand that companies won't just pay you what you are worth or what they call back your are worth.

Only once and that was a task I was in line to get working through a recruiter.  We were negotiating salary and the recruiter said he needed or possibly wanted it every bit he was the middle person and had to exist certain what I was looking to get was in line.  I approximate I tin sympathise that only to prove that he was representing me as a viable, true candidate.  I did say that the statement was not to be given to the employer simply simply for his records.

Why are they asking for a paystub?  This seems completely unnecessary.

Considering nosotros all inflate what we currently brand in gild to command a higher salary.  I would nonetheless tell them to take a hike.

A Pay stub from my last employer?? I'd be more than than a scrap leery about whatsoever company that would ask for that. Picture ID, SSN, birth certificate or proof of citizenship no problem . Nigh chore applications I've filled out there is a question if they can contact your electric current employer or non.

I agree with the other posts - this is something that I take not heard of and would not ask of when I interview potential candidates. Candidates should be paid what they are worth and not based upon the last task.

RonaldH

Never been asked to do so. And if someone would, I would answer "None of your business".

This seems like a strange practice.  I accept never heard of this as part of the interviewing process.

Every bit a personal decision I do not provide salary history to whatsoever prospective employer. This has sometimes removed me from consideration for a chore, however I am fine with this as these are not companies I desire to piece of work for. For many companies salary history is a way to lowball candidates. For me I state what I am looking to earn, if they meet me as a candidate worth that corporeality they talk to me, if not they don't.

I am also at a point in my life where I don't need to take any job I'm approached nearly, I have a stable position with a bacon that I am satisfied with. That gives me a great deal of negotiating ability in dealing with prospective employers.

This is actually illegal in some states, so check into that. Likewise, what does that have anything to do with what you can practise for the company that'south interviewing you. My response would accept been, "I'm lamentable, but that doesn't show my worth to your company, and has nothing to do with my skills." An interview is to see if you're capable of taking on the job they are wanting to rent for, and to see if you would fit in well with their environment. Asking for a paycheck stub is bad form, and that would take thrown a ruddy flag for me. Just how they are willing to throw you to the adjourn if you don't fit well yous should exist doing the aforementioned during that interview virtually them.
